Your Gut Isn’t Broken—It’s Just Menopause

By Allie Theiss, MSc, CSC, ABS

Why your digestion changed, what it means, and how to reset your gut during the menopause transition

You’re doing all the “right” things—eating fiber, drinking water, cutting back on sugar—and yet, your gut is acting like a drama queen. Bloating. Constipation. Gas. Food sensitivities that came out of nowhere. It’s enough to make you wonder if your body is revolting against you.

Let me be clear:
Your gut isn’t broken. It’s just menopause.

Menopause and Your Microbiome: The Missing Link

During perimenopause and postmenopause, declining estrogen levels directly impact your gut. Estrogen plays a key role in maintaining the diversity and function of your microbiome—the trillions of bacteria living in your digestive tract that influence everything from mood to metabolism. When hormone levels shift, so do your gut bacteria.

This imbalance can show up as:

  • Sluggish digestion and constipation

  • Increased bloating after meals

  • New food intolerances (gluten, dairy, sugar)

  • Brain fog and fatigue

  • Weight gain around the midsection

You’re not imagining it. This is the real, messy middle of hormonal transition—and your gut is on the frontlines.

Why Old Advice Doesn’t Work Anymore

Remember when a green smoothie or a bowl of oatmeal used to “fix” everything? That was then. Midlife digestion requires a more innovative and gentler approach. No more pushing your body to follow rigid food rules that were designed for a younger version of you.

Menopause requires a new kind of nourishment—one that acknowledges your hormonal reality and prioritizes nervous system regulation, blood sugar balance, and inflammation reduction.

Gut Reset, Menopause Style: What Actually Works

Here’s what I guide my private clients through in the THRIVE™ Framework when gut issues flare up in menopause:

1. Stabilize Blood Sugar First

Blood sugar crashes can inflame your gut and spike cortisol, which throws your whole system out of whack. Start your meals with protein + fiber + healthy fat. Think:

  • Eggs with avocado on whole grain toast

  • Salmon with lentils and sautéed spinach

  • Chia pudding with almond butter and berries

2. Support Estrobolome Health

The estrobolome is a subset of gut bacteria that helps metabolize estrogen. Foods like:

  • Flaxseeds

  • Broccoli sprouts

  • Fermented veggies

  • Prebiotic fibers (like garlic, leeks, asparagus)
…can help your body process hormones more efficiently.

3. Prioritize Nervous System Calm

Digestion is parasympathetic—it works best when you’re calm. If you’re scarfing lunch in front of your inbox, your gut won’t digest it properly. Simple breathwork before meals, walking after dinner, and using tools like my Crave Control™ or Calm the Hell Down™ essential oil roll-ons can work wonders.

4. Hydrate Like a Queen

Midlife digestion needs lubrication. If you’re not drinking enough water (especially with electrolytes), everything slows down. Add lemon, a pinch of sea salt, or cucumber slices to your water to boost absorption.

5. Rethink Fiber

Consuming too much raw fiber can exacerbate if your gut is already struggling. Try gently cooked veggies, stewed apples, and warm soups. Your belly will thank you.

You don’t need a restrictive elimination diet, a $300 gut test, or a cabinet full of supplements to feel better. You need a menopause-aware gut strategy—one rooted in hormonal shifts, nervous system care, and real nourishment.
