Why Are My Nails Splitting Like Bad Exes?

You’re minding your own business, opening a jar, and snap—there goes another nail. And much like that ill-advised second date with your ex, you knew it was fragile, but you hoped for the best.

Brittle, splitting nails are a surprisingly common (and infuriating) symptom of menopause. The culprit? Shifts in estrogen, progesterone, and even thyroid function that change how your body produces keratin—the protein that makes nails strong. Add in decreased circulation to the nail bed, slower cell turnover, and a little everyday wear-and-tear, and you’ve got nails that peel, split, or break faster than you can say “manicure.”

Why Menopause Nails Are Different

When estrogen levels drop, moisture levels in the nails also decrease. This makes them more rigid and prone to snapping. Collagen levels also decline, resulting in a loss of some of the nail’s resilience. Even your cuticles can dry out, leaving tiny gaps that weaken the nail from the base up.

Other common factors in midlife that make things worse:

  • Frequent hand washing or sanitizers (strips natural oils)

  • Harsh nail products like acetone-based removers

  • Low nutrient intake (especially biotin, iron, and omega-3s)

  • Medical conditions like hypothyroidism, which is more common after menopause

What You Can Do to Strengthen Nails Now

The good news? You don’t have to accept “bad ex” nails as your new normal.

  • Moisturize daily – Applying a cuticle oil or massaging simple jojoba oil twice a day can work wonders.

  • Protect them – Wear gloves for dishes, gardening, and cleaning.

  • Feed your nails – Prioritize protein, leafy greens, nuts, and seeds to boost keratin production.

  • Skip the harsh stuff – Switch to acetone-free removers and breathable nail polish formulas.

  • Hydrate from the inside out – Water matters for nail health as much as it does for skin.

Remember, nails grow slowly, about 3 mm a month, so give any new routine at least 3–6 months before judging results.

Menopause changes a lot about your body, but it doesn’t have to steal your confidence (or your favorite nail polish moment). With the proper care, your nails can be as strong as your boundaries—and both are worth protecting.
