Menopause and Joint Pain: What’s Causing It (And How to Feel Better)

You didn’t fall. You didn’t run a marathon. You’re just… existing. And suddenly your knees, hips, fingers, and ankles are staging a rebellion. Welcome to the not-so-fun surprise party known as menopausal joint pain.
Joint pain during menopause isn’t just a “getting older” thing. It’s a whole-body shift—physically, emotionally, and energetically. Let’s pull back the curtain and take a real look at what’s going on beneath the surface—and how you can actually feel better.
🌡️ The Real Culprit: Estrogen & Inflammation
Estrogen isn’t just about periods and pregnancies. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone. Inflammation increases when it drops (which it loves to do in perimenopause). That inflammation doesn’t just make you puffy—it settles into joints, tendons, and connective tissue, making everything feel stiff, sore, and unpredictable.
Throw in:
-
Collagen loss (goodbye, flexibility)
-
Less synovial fluid (your joints’ natural lube)
-
Declining muscle mass (less support for those joints)
-
And disrupted sleep + elevated cortisol…
…and you’ve got the perfect storm for creaky mornings and “ugh” every time you bend over.
🧠 It’s Not Just Physical
Your emotional and energetic bodies are also impacted. According to traditional Chinese medicine, joints are where we store emotional rigidity. In my practice, I see women carrying unprocessed stress, resentment, and grief in their hips and shoulders all the time. Joint pain can be your body’s signal, not just a symptom.
🛠️ How to Actually Feel Better: The Whole-Woman Approach
Here’s what I recommend to my clients who are dealing with this very real, very annoying issue:
🔁 1. Flow First, Force Later
Ditch the “no pain, no gain” mindset. Gentle, rhythmic movement is your best friend. Think:
-
Rebounding (mini trampoline)
-
Belly dancing
-
Yin yoga or restorative stretching
These release joint tension and move emotional energy.
🥬 2. Eat for Ease, Not Inflammation
Foods that reduce inflammation and lubricate your system:
-
Omega-3s (chia seeds, flax, salmon)
-
Olive oil and avocados
-
Turmeric, ginger, cinnamon
-
Colorful veggies (eat the rainbow—literally)
Bonus: cut down on sugar and ultra-processed foods. They’re inflammation’s best friend, and your joints know it.
💧 3. Hydrate & Lubricate
Hydration helps your joints move, your fascia stretch, and your lymph drain. Think water, herbal teas, and broths.
Add in:
-
Evening primrose oil
-
Collagen powder
-
Hyaluronic acid supplements
These help your body rebuild from the inside.
🌿 4. Nourish with Nature
Support with essential oils and flower essences:
-
Frankincense for inflammation
-
Copaiba for cellular repair
-
Comfrey flower essence for joint recovery
-
Black cohosh for hormone balancing (consult with your provider first)
Use topically in a carrier oil or in roll-ons/diffusers for extra support.
🌙 5. Magnesium: The Muscle Whisperer
Transdermal magnesium (like sprays or Epsom salt baths) can calm nerves and muscles. Magnesium glycinate is great for sleep and pain relief. Most of us are low in it—especially during perimenopause.
💛 6. Tend to the Emotional Load
Joint pain isn’t just physical—it often points to stuck emotions, unmet needs, and repressed frustration. Ask yourself:
-
Where am I holding back?
-
What emotional weight am I still carrying?
-
What needs to move or be released?
Journaling, somatic therapy, and even simple guided meditation can help shift this energy.
🔥 You Deserve to Feel Good in Your Body Again
You are not meant to suffer silently. This isn’t “just aging.” This is your body asking for a new way of being—one that’s rooted in support, nourishment, and awareness.
